January 2, 2025A life-affirming, genre-bending story based on Stephen King’s novel about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Cranston. Marvel Cinematic Universe, but none of them share scenes together. Hiddleston is Loki, which is associated with the Thor (2011) films and the Loki (2021) TV series, Gillan is Nebula, which is most associated with the Verdant Vetrarbrautarinnar (2014) films, Ejiofor is Baron Mordo in the Doctor Strange (2016) films. Dastmalchian is Kurt from the first Ant-Man 2 films and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Web of Quantumania (2023).. Mentioned in Front Row Flynn: SLEEPING DOGS: Karen Gillan, Adam Cooper, Moderator Perri Nemiroff (2024). In short, Mike Flanagan has made a deep, multi-layered but beautiful film about the value of life. It’s really hard to explain, but Flanagan doesn’t waste a beat. There’s a narrative throughout the film, but it’s precisely in ‘Act Three,’ that everything you see and experience in ‘Act One’ is beautifully laid out. Ejiofor & Gillan in Act Three are fantastic, but if The Life of Chuck is to be called anything, it has to be the sound. From the cosmic elements in ‘Act Three’; to the dance scenes in ‘Acts Two & One,’ Flanagan did an exceptional job incorporating sound throughout. Of course, everyone is focused on Hiddleston and his character, but even Tom mentioned that it was a team effort in Act Two, and Hiddleston’s dance partner in Act Two, Annalise. and Taylor Gordon (who is also credited as The Pocket Queen), buskers, all three of whom are choreographers Mandy Moore & Stephanie Powell, really sing the dance scene. Taylor Gordon is a talent in her own right in her short, but excellent role. What surprised me was how Act One was with young Chuck and how great the kids were. Their performances were just as brilliant as the adults when young Chuck gets a very haunting monologue from his grandfather (an incredible Mark Hamill) about some of the choices he makes in life. Act One really helps to piece together the puzzle, and it’s in Act Three that the universal elements can be removed, but they all serve a purpose. Stephen King would be right if he said Life of Chuck was one of his best. The spirit and energy are palpable from start to finish, and with all the performances, Flanagan continues to establish himself as one of the great contemporary directors. I will say one thing, The Life of Chuck is dedicated to the memory of Scott Wampler. There are a few cameos in The Life of Chuck, but Scott’s inclusion really pulled me in. Great movie.
